Enjoy official fireworks shows in our county, but remember to follow key rules to ensure a safe holiday

In an effort to reduce wildfire risk and maintain the health and safety of visitors and residents during Fourth of July celebrations, county officials are emphasizing two key rules: All fireworks are illegal in unincorporated Placer County, including the Lake Tahoe Basin, and alcohol is banned on the Truckee River from July 1-6. Learn more

Ensuring everyone’s safety: The Placer County Sheriff's Office will be stepping up enforcement countywide throughout the holiday weekend to maintain safety.

Fireworks ban: Due to Placer County’s vulnerability to damaging wildfires, fireworks of all types are prohibited in unincorporated Placer County, including ‘safe and sane’ fireworks sold at roadside stands.

Beach rules: Officials from the Placer County Sheriff’s Office also want to remind tourists and residents in North Lake Tahoe to follow the county’s beach ordinances this summer. Watch video

Tahoe City Fourth of July Park and Ride: Residents and visitors can celebrate Independence Day stress-free by taking advantage of TART’s free park and ride service. Shuttles will run every 30 minutes from 5:30 to 11 p.m. between the Northstar Castle Peak parking lot and the Tahoe City Transit Center.

Pet safety: Fourth of July fireworks can spook pets—make sure they’re licensed, tagged and microchipped so they can find their way home if they get lost.

This week in Placer County history

The composer Terry Riley with a long white beard smiles before a microphone

On June 24, 1935, Terry Riley, a renowned composer and performing musician, was born in Colfax.

Riley studied music and composition at San Francisco State University, the San Francisco Conservatory and at the University of California, Berkeley. Early in his career, he experimented with tape loops and improvisation and was influenced by classical Indian music and jazz. But it was his foray into minimalism that merged all of his experiences, influences and creative energy into his breakthrough composition, “In C.”

According to the Nov. 3, 2024 National Public Radio article: “In 1964, a young composer named Terry Riley was on his way to work – playing ragtime piano at San Francisco’s Gold Street Saloon – when he had a light bulb moment that would alter the American musical landscape. A tiny, hiccupping, 2-note seed unexpectedly came to him. ‘I was riding to work on the bus when I heard this first line come into my consciousness like somebody was playing it to me,’ Riley recalls. ‘And I got quite excited, so as soon as I got off work that night, I went home and wrote down the first line.’ That seed blossomed into In C, a piece which essentially launched the musical movement later known as minimalism.”

Riley’s innovative music style influenced other composers such as Philip Glass and John Adams. His work also inspired rock bands and musicians such as The Who and Mike Oldfield.

Since 2021, Riley has resided in Japan.
