WATCH: Large pieces of American River Bridge debris pulled from the water

Progress continues on the American River Bridge debris removal project. Recently, the contractor removed large chunks of metal from the water. Divers have been cutting the material underwater, and excavators are being used to pull the debris out. Watch video

Superior Court remains open during United Public Employee strike

This week in Placer County history

On October 27, 1947, the Placer County Centennial Committee accepted the offer from the 20th Agricultural District to house what would later become the Placer County Museum in the mining building in the fairgrounds. The Placer County Centennial Committee’s purpose was to recognize and celebrate the three significant centennials of California history: the centennial of gold discovery in 1948; the Gold Rush in 1949; and California statehood in 1950. Opening a museum to interpret these milestones and to reflect on our history was an important first step.

According to the October 30, 1947, Auburn Journal: “The museum will be open to the public, free of charge, as soon as the exhibit material can be collected and placed in glass show cases and other suitable positions.”

This was the moment the Placer County Museum was born. It would eventually grow into a system of eight museums and an Archives and Research Center by 2022. Though the museum is no longer located in the mining building in the Gold Country Fairgrounds, that location will forever be tied to the history of the Placer County Museums.
