This week in Placer County history

A massive crowd of people marching down main street holding American flags.

Auburn celebrated Armistice on Nov. 11, 1918, which was the signing of the agreement that established a ceasefire and signified the end of the Great War, later known as World War I. By 7:30 a.m., more than 1,000 people joined in a spontaneous parade through the streets, pictured here in Central Square, carrying U.S. flags and sharing in the joy of the peace to come. They are wearing masks as required by Auburn City Ordinance No. 182, which was designed to slow the deadly influenza pandemic that was spreading at the time.

Armistice Day was officially commemorated in 1919 as a day to show gratitude for veterans and heroes, and to reflect upon the importance of peace.

The day continued to be observed over the years and in 1938, Nov. 11 officially became a legal holiday. Finally, in 1954 and following both World War II and U.S. involvement in the Korean War, President Dwight D. Eisenhower renamed the day to Veterans Day to include gratitude and recognition for all veterans serving the United States to remember the sacrifices they made, and to “reconsecrate ourselves to the task of promoting an enduring peace so that their efforts shall not have been made in vain.”
