Cold and deadly: Why you should stay out of local rivers this spring

Unseasonably warm temperatures are accelerating snowmelt in Placer County's mountains, sending ice-cold water into local rivers and streams at dangerous levels. What looks like an inviting place to cool off can turn deadly in seconds.

Members of CAL FIRE / Placer County Fire Department and the Placer County Sheriff's Office are urging residents to stay out of and away from swollen rivers this season. Snowmelt is cold, unpredictable and unforgiving — even for strong swimmers. Visit the Be River Wise webpage for more information. Watch video

This week in Placer County history

A man wearing a suit and a wide-brimmed hat uses an axe to destroy a gambling table

On March 24, 1953, outside of the jail behind the Placer County courthouse in Auburn, Sheriff Charles Ward destroyed gambling equipment confiscated during a raid at the Hy-De-Ho in Roseville under the direction of District Attorney Al Broyer.

The raid took place Feb. 22 and recovered $1,058.50 in cash, along with two blackjack tables, a dice table and several decks of cards, which were suspected of being marked.

The Hy-De-Ho Club was a restaurant and dance hall that boasted live music. It was located 2 miles south of Roseville at the Placer County line on Auburn Boulevard and had been in operation since the early 1930s. A well-known “floating” gambling establishment, the sheriff had unsuccessfully tried to catch illegal gambling for several months after receiving reports.

At the time, the club operated under a license to allow California draw poker and other legal card games, but as the sheriff reported, on weekends, the club was known to host craps, blackjack and other forms of illegal gambling.

According to the law, the money and equipment were stored for 30 days, during which time they could be claimed by rightful owners. When no one stepped forward to claim the property, the cash was turned over to the Placer County Treasurer to be added to the county’s general fund and the equipment was destroyed.
