  4. By: Roseville Police Department It’s official. The 2024 tax season has arrived. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) started accepting paper and electronic tax returns on Monday, January 29, 2024. If you’re looking forward to getting your tax refund this year, be careful, as tax identity thieves may want to get your refund, too. According to the Federal Trade Commission, tax identity theft happens when someone uses your Social Security number to get a tax refund or a job. You might find out it has happened when you get a letter from the IRS saying more than one tax return was filed in your name, or IRS records show you have wages from an employer you don’t know. The IRS uses your Social Security Number (SSN) to make sure your filing is accurate and complete, and that you get any refund you are due. Identity theft can affect how your tax return is processed. An unexpected notice or letter from the IRS could alert you that someone else is using your SSN. Remember, the IRS never starts contact with a taxpayer by sending an email, text or social media message that asks for personal or financial information. If you get an email that claims to be from the IRS, do not reply or click on any links. Instead, forward it to phishing@irs.gov. If someone uses your SSN to file for a tax refund before you do, the IRS might think you already filed and got your refund. When you file your return later, IRS records will show the first filing and refund, and you’ll get a notice or letter from the IRS saying more than one return was filed for you. If someone uses your SSN to get a job, the employer may report that person’s income to the IRS using your SSN. When you file your tax return, you won’t include those earnings. IRS records will show you failed to report all your income. The agency will send you a notice or letter saying you got wages but didn’t report them. The IRS doesn’t know those wages were reported by an employer you don’t know. If you want to avoid becoming a victim this tax season, The FTC has these tips to fight tax identity theft: File your tax return early in the tax season, if you can. Use a secure internet connection if you file electronically, or mail your tax return directly from the post office. Respond to all mail from the IRS as soon as possible. If tax identity theft happens to you, visit IdentityTheft.gov to report it to the FTC, file an Identity Theft Affidavit with the IRS electronically, and get a personal recovery plan. Now is prime time for tax identity theft, as millions of individuals file their personal tax returns leading up to the April 15 filing deadline. However, protecting your identity is a year-long endeavor. Your personal information is valuable. By securing your identity today, you can minimize your chances of becoming a victim of identity theft. For more information on this year’s tax season, please visit the IRS at: https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/2024-tax-filing-season-set-for-january-29-irs-continues-to-make-improvements-to-help-taxpayers For more information from the FTC regarding reporting tax identity theft, please visit: https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/blog/2018/04/report-tax-identity-theft-identitytheftgov#:~:text=You%20can%20report%20tax%20identity%20theft%20to%20the,filed%20a%20federal%20tax%20return%20using%20your%20information

  9. By: The Roseville Police Department\ It’s a new year. Are you or a family member looking for that someone special in 2024? Now, more than ever, people are using their smart phone for almost everything, including finding their soul mate. According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), in 2022 nearly 70,000 people reported a romance scam and this resulted in a loss of $1.3 billion dollars. You’ve no doubt heard of people being scammed on dating apps, but according to the FTC a more common way romance scams began was with an unexpected message on a social media platform. Older adults that are lonely or have recently lost a spouse are especially vulnerable to romance scams. These scammers are unscrupulous and will exploit any vulnerability of their victim. In the end, these scammers have one thing in common. They want your money. The FTC states in 2022 the largest aggregate reported losses were in cryptocurrency, but more people reported paying the scammer with gift cards than any other method. The Department of Homeland Security’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) (https://www.ice.gov/features/LoveOnline) offers the following tips to avoid losing money to a romance scam: Protect yourself and older loved ones by raising awareness. Although this can be an uncomfortable topic, make sure you, your family, and your friends are familiar with romance scams. The more you know about these scams, the better prepared you are to prevent being a victim. Check in on older loved ones. Scammers are seeking to target those living alone or grieving the loss of a spouse as they are more vulnerable. Limit what you share online. Scammers can use details shared on social media and dating sites to better understand and target you. Do your research. Research the individual’s photo and profile using online searches to see if the image, name, or other details have been used elsewhere. Go slowly and ask lots of questions. Don’t let the individual rush you to leave a dating service or social media site to communicate directly. Listen to your gut. If the individual seems too good to be true, talk to someone you trust. Don’t overshare personal information. Requests for inappropriate photos or financial information could later be used to extort you. Be suspicious if you haven’t met in person. If the individual promises to meet in person, but consistently comes up with an excuse for cancelling, be suspicious. Don’t send money. Never send money (i.e. gift card, cryptocurrency, or money wire) to anyone you have only communicated with online or by phone. If you’ve lost money to a romantic scammer or think that they may have stolen your personal information, report it to the FTC (www.reportfraud.ftc.gov) and file a report with your local police department.

  18. Be aware of charity scams By: Roseville Police Department Have you made a donation to a charity recently? Perhaps you plan to make a donation to start out the new year. Whether you are making a donation now or in the future, be careful. There are criminals waiting to take advantage of your generosity. Charity scams take many forms: Online giving There has been a lot growth in online scamming over the past years. Many bad-actors are purporting to be charities requesting donations. Even if you receive an email from a recognized and respected charity name, don’t assume the request is really coming from them. Take a close look at the name of the sender. Does it really show an email address pertaining to that charity? Charity emails usually end in “.org”. If not, it could be from a scammer. Don’t click on or open any links on these messages. Doing so may give the sender access to personal information on your computer and in some cases gives the sender control over your computer. Unsolicited phone calls Phone scamming continues to increase. It’s estimated over 59 million US residents lost money from a phone scam in 2021. Legitimate charities rarely make random calls for donations. The easy way to avoid scam calls is to just not answer calls if you don’t recognize the caller ID. Most of these calls are automated (Robocalls) and never leave a voicemail. House calls and street collectors It’s relatively easy for scammers to go door to door pretending to be collecting for a charity. Some even have fake IDs they show you, knowing that you don’t easily have the capability to check if the ID is valid or not. To help deter door-to-door scammers, post a “No Soliciting” sign on or near your front door. If you are out around town and someone is collecting on the sidewalk, don’t assume they are a legitimate charity. Check them out on your own before giving money or your personal information. Tips to follow: Don’t let any charity rush or pressure you into making a donation, of any kind. Look for specifics regarding how your donation will be used. Confirm that the charity or organization is legitimate and is a non-profit organization listed with the FTC (www.consumer.ftc.gov/). Avoid sweepstakes claiming to exchange winnings for a donation; that’s both a scam and illegal. Some sites to use to search for legitimate and registered charities or non-profit organizations are: BBB Wise Giving Alliance http://www.give.org/ Charity Navigator http://www.charitynavigator.org/ CharityWatch http://www.charitywatch.org/ Guidestar http://www.guidestar.org/ Taking time to ask questions, gather information, and verify an organization’s non-profit status can help make sure that your generous giving will truly go to those that need help. It can also help ensure that your personal information is protected and not compromised by scammers looking for easy targets. If you believe you have been the victim or have had your personal information jeopardized, please contact the Roseville Police Department or file a crime report online.
