Placer shows up for mental health

Placer County wrapped up Mental Health Matters Month with a strong showing from county and community partners — all spreading the word that seeking help is a sign of strength, and that help is available.

One of the biggest highlights was the annual #Placer4MentalHealth Wellness Fair, where hundreds of residents came out to connect with local resources and try out hands‑on wellness activities. Check out the video recap!

A new video also spotlights the Cirby Hills Wellness Center — a welcoming space where adults can drop in for peer support, group activities and recovery-focused opportunities. Explore their full calendar of activities here

Last week, our Board of Supervisors Chair Shanti Landon joined representatives from Teichert, Caltrans and the Associated General Contractors of California for the 2026 Mental Health Construction Standdown. This event highlighted the importance of mental health in jobsite safety and worker well being in an industry where stress and struggles often go unseen.

Beyond May, residents can access year-round crisis support through our mobile crisis teams and the Lotus Behavioral Health Crisis Center.

For most people experiencing mental health challenges, the best first step is to reach out to your health care provider, but for anyone unsure where to begin, our weekly walk‑in mental health and substance use clinics in Roseville and Auburn offer free, no‑appointment‑needed support.

Thank you to everyone who joined us this month and helped reinforce that mental health is a vital part of overall well‑being.

175 years of Placer County history

1890's circa image of man standing on a rail car loaded with timber as it sits on train tracks sounded by hills and trees.

The lumber industry spread quickly throughout Placer County and grew alongside mining. Apart from water, timber was the most important resource needed for mining, where it was primarily used in constructing sluices and flumes, and shoring up miles of underground tunnels.

By 1861, there were 23 sawmills in operation in the county, using steam and water to power saws and lathes while milling millions of board feet per year.

In 1859, the Comstock Lode, discovered near Virginia City, brought on a wave of expansion in lumbering on the eastern slopes of the Sierra Nevada and in the Truckee River and Tahoe basins. Meanwhile, throughout the 1860s, the second-largest consumer was the Central Pacific Railroad, which needed a constant supply of timber for railroad ties and to build trestles and snowsheds over the Sierra. With the completion of the transcontinental railroad, this opened new markets for California lumber to eastward consumers.

Initially, oxen provided the power to move heavy equipment, but by the 1880s, steam-powered tractors and dedicated “narrow gauge railroads” had taken over and ushered in a new heyday for the industry.
