  4. Winter Precautions By: Rob Baquera, Public Information Officer, Roseville Police Department The new year brings new resolutions and opportunities for change. Winter in the Sierra Foothills and Sacramento Valley can cause a variety of weather conditions. It is always best to take precautions when driving, but also be sure to be prepared in any situation. Keep Yourself Safe at Home: Check your home’s heating system; ensure smoke detectors and carbon monoxide systems are working properly. Keep an emergency “go bag” in case you need to suddenly leave at a moment’s notice. Many emergency kits include canned foods, water, cellphone charger, extra batteries, first-aid kits, extra medicine, baby items (if applicable), etc. Ready.gov provides some helpful tips on how to start and maintain a kit. Check windows, fence lines, and security systems for tampering. Keep Yourself Safe When Driving: Park your car in a safe, well-lit area or inside your garage if possible. Keep your gas tank full and regularly check your tire tread and tire pressure. Running out of gas or bad tires and poor weather conditions can lead to car accidents. Safe driving is always a top priority. Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle in case anything happens, or you need to pull to the side of the road. Having a portable charger, extra batteries, flares, booster cables, a tire pump, compass and map, flashlight, and battery-powered radio could help emergency responders get to you more quickly. CHP has some recommendations on some basic kit items for a roadside emergency kit, including some nice-to-have extras. Keep Yourself Safe Outdoors: Wear appropriate outdoor clothing for the weather – our weather changes from morning to afternoon to evening. Pack a jacket in case the weather changes or have a spare change of socks in the car in case it gets cold. If going to a new place for the first time, or meeting someone new, let a friend or relative know when and where you will be. Share your destination and who you will be meeting in case anything happens people know where you should be. Make sure when you head out for the day that your cellphone is fully charged or that you have a backup option to charge your cellphone. Staying safe in the winter is more than just scraping ice off our windshield or driving with low beams on a foggy morning. Keeping ourselves safe at home, when we’re out driving, and when we’re traveling are all important ways to protect our families.

Electric rate adjustment begins this month Roseville Electric Utility’s rate adjustment will go into effect starting with January bills. For the average residential household, this will equate to an increase of approximately $4 per month in 2022. The adjustment, which is the first rate increase in over seven years, was approved by the Roseville City Council in November. The adjustment is necessary due to an increase in the cost of delivering utility services, from meeting changing regulatory requirements to maintaining our workforce. 9. By: Rob Baquera, Public Information Officer, Roseville Police Department It’s the beginning of a new year, and many people have made some resolutions to improve their quality of life. This year consider adding some crime prevention resolutions to your list. If you are looking for ways to protect yourself from becoming a crime victim, then here are a few resolutions to consider. I resolve to: reduce my chances of becoming a victim of a vehicle break-in. Vehicle break-ins are a common crime in Roseville. Remember: Do not leave valuables inside your car. TAKE your valuables with you. LOCK your car. HIDE the things you cannot take before you arrive at your destination. keep doors closed and locked, even when at home. It may seem nice to leave your doors open on a nice day, but thieves just love the easy access they get with an open, or even just an unlocked, door. Simply getting into the habit of shutting and locking the door behind you can prevent many problems. Not a habit now? Make it one! keep my garage door closed at all times when not in use. Anytime you are out of sight from the garage door, even if it’s for a short time, close it. Otherwise, someone can easily slip into your garage or house without your knowledge. be a good neighbor. If you something suspicious in your neighborhood, call the police immediately. Join and become an active member of you Neighborhood Watch group. If you don’t have a Neighborhood Watch group, start one. By working together with your neighbors and law enforcement you can help deter crime in your neighborhood. ask for a valid ID or credential before letting anyone in my home I don’t know. Criminals are always looking for ways to gain entry into a home. If someone you don’t know shows up to your home unexpectedly, be suspicious. If you are interested in finding out more about Neighborhood Watch, visit our website https://roseville.ca.us and search “Neighborhood Watch.” Residents are also encouraged to sign-up for Public Safety and Neighborhood news alerts here. You can also follow us on Facebook (City of Roseville Public Safety) and Twitter (RSVL_Pub_Safety). Criminals never rest. They are always out looking for their next victim. Cozy up to energy savings Staying comfortable while saving energy is important no matter the season. But with the holidays right around the corner, what better time than now to save energy and money. Here are some simple, cool-weather conservation tips: Keep vents open and air flowing. Closing doors and room vents puts extra strain on the central heating system. Open drapes and shades on sunny days to let in heat from the sun; close them at night and on cloudy days. And, set your thermostat to 68 degrees and lower it to 55 degrees at night or when you’re away from home. Remember that if you lower your thermostat by two degrees during the winter, you can save about 10% on the operating cost of your heater. For additional ways to save, visit roseville.ca.us/lowermybill. Home for the holidays Are you worried about your holiday utility bill or stressing about how you can make changes this season? We are here to help! Saving water, conserving energy, reducing garbage, and stopping sewer clogs can be easy. Dangers of attaching items to a utility pole A utility pole may seem like a convenient place to hang a poster or a camera, but attaching items to utility poles or street lights can be dangerous and is prohibited. Our line crews work around the clock in all types of weather conditions, and attaching items like homemade signs, banners, and brackets to utility poles can cause serious hazards. If a lineman needs to climb a pole to access overhead equipment for maintenance or to restore power during an outage, these items can become hazardous obstacles. Even something as small as a nail can puncture a lineman’s clothes and gloves or snag safety gear, making the lineman vulnerable to falls or possibly electrocution. 17. Holiday Shopping Tips By: Rob Baquera, Public Information Officer, Roseville Police Department The holiday season is here and many of us have started to resume some of our pre-pandemic routines. There are two things to consider since the last time we purchased those holiday gifts: We’ve shifted the frequency for how often we shop online or through mobile applications. It’s been a while since we last visited the mall or many of our favorite retail locations. These two factors have created plenty of opportunities that criminals will use to take to take advantage of unsuspecting shoppers. No matter how you shop, keep these tips in mind the next time you order something online or walk into an actual store. Tips to stay safe while you are out and about: Avoid distracted walking; be aware of your surroundings and whatever items you may be carrying. Use purses that zip or latch as this makes it more difficult for someone to slip their hand in and your wallet out. If carrying a bag, try to keep it in front of you, close to your body, or under your arm. If possible, leave your purse or valuables at home – take only what you need. Do not carry any more cash or credit cards than needed – more often than not, one card is enough. Walk in busy, well-lit areas, or go shopping in groups. Put shopping bags in your trunk before you park, be aware of prying eyes. Online shopping offers a convenient way to shop and avoid the crowds; however, it may make you vulnerable to identity theft or porch pirates. Tips to stay safe while shopping from home: Try to shop from reputable websites or sites you already trust and make sure you recognize the payment website (Confirm that you have not been diverted to another website to enter your payment information.). Pay using verified payment websites (sites that start with https://). Create strong passwords for all your online accounts – avoid passwords like: Password1 or Roseville123. Avoid clicking on suspicious or odd emails – always verify the sender is from a recognized email address. If you are going to be away from home for several days, consider placing a hold on your U.S. mail. Request delivery companies hide packages, if possible, to avoid porch package thefts. Regularly check your bank or credit card statements to ensure there are no unauthorized transactions. Being aware and proactive while shopping can help ensure that you have a wonderful and memorable holiday season. If you believe you have unauthorized bank or credit card charges, contact the financial institution immediately. If your mail or packages are stolen, contact the seller and file a crime report on the Roseville Police Department’s website.

Keep your cell phones charged, some extra cash on hand and your gas tank at least half full. Plan for batteries and other alternatives to meet your needs when the power goes out. Review the supplies that are available in case of a power outage. Have flashlights with extra batteries for every household member. Also, have enough nonperishable food and water. There are also simple things you can do to help prevent a storm-related power outage. Make sure to properly store lightweight outdoor furniture and garden accessories and remove landscape debris. This prevents them from being carried away by strong winds and into overhead power lines. To report a power outage, visit our outage map at https://roseville.ca.us/outages or call (916) 79-POWER.
