Global semiconductor manufacturer Bosch planning to buy Roseville company, invest $1.5 billion locally Global semiconductor manufacturer Bosch plans to acquire assets of the U.S. chipmaker TSI Semiconductors (TSI), based in Roseville and expand its semiconductor business with silicon carbide chips. Over the next years, Bosch intends to invest more than $1.5 billion in the Roseville site and convert the TSI Semiconductors manufacturing facilities to state-of-the-art processes. “Roseville is a highly sought-after location for innovative companies expanding their operations. Mailing checks can be a risky business By: Roseville Police Department Writing checks and mailing them has declined in recent years as the option to pay bills online has become more common. Check fraud and theft, however, has been growing- doubling over the last year. There are two distinct categories of crimes involving checks: Check theft Typically, check theft occurs when the scammer is able to intercept your check before it reaches the US Postal Service or before is actually received by the recipient. There has been a rise in theft from both personal mailboxes and USPS blue maildrops by thieves breaking the locks and stealing mail. Recently a mail carrier was even robbed at gunpoint to get the master key that unlocks all USPS mailboxes. Once in possession of a check, the scammers can ‘wash’ the check, a process to remove your writing and replace it with theirs. A $20 check can quickly become $2000. They will occasionally set up an account with a bank to receive the funds or use a check cashing business. After the bank clears the check in a few days, the scammer has access to and withdraws the money. It usually takes the bank, or you, several more days to identify the fraud, by which time the money is long gone, and you are sometimes left owing to the bank. Check scamming This involves a scammer conning you into sending them a check and/or sending you a fake one. Scams include: Emails telling you that you’ve won a prize. Frequently you are asked to send a check for a small amount just to cover “taxes and shipping costs”. They cash your check and disappear. They may also ’wash’ your check, turning it into a larger amount. People buying an item from you online may ’accidentally‘ overpay you and ask you to return the overpayment as a check. Once you do so, they can again “wash” your check inserting a much larger amount. Often, the check they sent you will also be returned as fraudulent. Scammers posing as businesses send you their fake check, urgently asking you to buy gift cards and send them the pin numbers. The moment you do so, they cash the cards out. You find out later that the check was not real. Sometimes cryptocurrency or wire transfers are used instead of gift cards in their scam. How to avoid check scams: 1) Make payments electronically wherever possible. 2) If you have to mail a check, take it to a Post Office and drop it in the lobby mail slot. 3) Monitor you checking transactions frequently online and inform your bank immediately of suspicious activity. 4) Do not respond to personal shopper or “you have won” emails or texts. 5) Do not write checks for the balance of overpayments. In all cases of suspected fraud, notify your bank and file a report with the Postal Inspection Service where mail theft is suspected.

Distracted driving impacts our roadways By: Rob Baquera, Public Information Officer, Roseville Police Department According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the latest data on distracted driving reveals: More than 400,000 motorists were injured in accidents caused by distracted driving and 2,800 deaths occurred as a result. Drivers reported being distracted 30% more often than when asked a year before. Distracted driving spikes at night between 6:00 pm and 11:00 pm. Distracted driving was a reported factor in 8.1% of fatal motor vehicle crashes. 42% of high school students in the U.S. admitted that they text or email while driving. Roughly 20% of injuries occurring in car accident crashes involve distracted driving. Drivers are distracted by their phones at least 10% of their driving time. A ringing cell phone, fighting kids, or a spilling coffee cup: no one is immune from distractions. The average car weighs around 5000 pounds. When you mix distractions and a vehicle traveling down the road, you get distracted driving. Distracted driving can occur when something diverts your attention from the task of safe and attentive driving. According to the Center for Disease Control – Injury Center, there are three primary types of distractions: Mental or cognitive – when a driver’s mind is focused on something besides driving. These can include talking to another passenger, thinking about something that is upsetting, road rage, daydreaming, or being under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol. Visual – when a driver looks at something other than what is ahead on the road. These can include looking for items on the floor of the car, checking and adjusting your GPS, changing the radio station, adjusting your temperature controls, taking in the view, or doing your makeup, and, of course, texting or dialing on your cellphone. Manual – when one or both hands are taken off the wheel. These can include eating and drinking, adjusting your child's seatbelt, smoking, searching through your purse or wallet, or turning knobs in your car. There are things you can do to ensure you are driving as safely as possible. Here are some simple ways to minimize driving distractions: Keep your eyes on the road. Pull over to read directions. Put your phone in “Do Not Disturb” mode. Keep your phone out of reach. Make all adjustments before driving. Don’t reach for items while driving. Avoid phone calls, even hands-free. Stay focused on the road. Keep your emotions in check. Distracted driving is a major cause of car-related injuries. Complacency can be a huge factor. Many accidents happen near or around your home due to your familiarity with the surroundings. Do your best to stay focused on the task of driving safely and you will be able to respond more quickly, be better positioned to think clearly when needing to respond, and likely spot a distraction before it becomes a problem.
