Placer, regional partners break ground on Placer Parkway Phase 1

The future of transportation in western Placer County took a major step forward today as county leaders and regional partners broke ground on Placer Parkway, launching construction on a long-awaited expressway that will reshape travel across the region.

The first phase of the project will create a critical new east-west connection, easing congestion while laying the foundation for future homes, jobs and economic opportunity.

175 years of Placer County history

The historic community of Dutch Flat was established in 1851 when brothers Charles and Joseph Dornbach and their families settled here after a long journey by wagon from Illinois.

The location was a small grassy flat sitting at an elevation of 3,265 feet above sea level. Surrounded by water and natural resources, the location had been a seasonal summer camp used by local Nisenan for generations.

The permanent settlement grew quickly in the 1850s, supported by a series of ditches built to convey water from the nearby Bear River. By 1860, this included a population of 973 people according to that year’s federal Census.

Of them, 38 were Chinese residents and merchants who continued to expand a vibrant cultural enclave within the community.  By 1870, 35% of Dutch Flat’s entire population were Chinese.

Today, within the Dutch Flat Historic District, the Golden Drift Museum preserves the legacy of this community and the surrounding area.

On Saturday, July 25, the Heritage Trail Museums Tour will include stops at the Golden Drift Museum as well as the Colfax History Museum, where visitors can meet with local experts and discover how the course of history was literally changed in this notable region. Learn more
