Law enforcement leaders speak out after violent episode claims life of former District Attorney’s Office employee

Placer County residents are breathing a sigh of relief following the efforts of the Placer County Sheriff’s Office to locate 44-year-old Derek Spencer, who was wanted following a violent crime spree that resulted in the death of an innocent woman. After an hours-long search through the rugged Iowa Hill terrain, members of the Placer County Sheriff’s Office Special Enforcement Team located Spencer early Monday morning. After Spencer fired multiple shots at deputies, he was struck and killed by deputies who returned fire. 

This was a dangerous and challenging operation that required an incredible amount of coordination, resources and support from our law enforcement and public safety partners. Most importantly, our hearts remain with the family of Cheryl Macy, whose life was tragically taken. Cheryl worked for more than a decade with our Placer County District Attorney’s Office. Sheriff Wayne Woo and District Attorney Morgan Gire shared details of the operation and addressed Cheryl’s loss in remarks to our Board of Supervisors this week.
