Water Treatment Plant celebrates 50 years In August 1971, the Barton Road Water Treatment Plant was officially dedicated to the Roseville community. It started treating, filtering and pumping clean drinking water to a community that historically relied on groundwater wells and ditched water for drinking water. The impetus for the treatment plant came when in 1967, Roseville established a 40-year agreement with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation to obtain surface water supplies from Folsom Lake. As plans were underway to obtain the new water supply, the community coined “Going to Folsom.” Read on Temporary generators now online in Roseville Two temporary mobile generators are now online in Roseville following six weeks of construction at the Roseville Energy Park. 4. Porch and Front Door Safety By: Rob Baquera, Public Information Officer, Roseville Police Department Package theft, home burglaries, and garage break-ins always increase in the fall. With more hours of darkness heading our way, our historical trends show criminal activity increases. Technology has greatly improved many aspects of home security. Video doorbells, easy to install home security systems, and motion lighting have become less expensive and we highly recommend residents research these solutions. The good news is you don’t have to spend money to deter crime. There are several low-cost and low-tech things you can do to decrease your chances of becoming a victim. Here’s a few to consider: Consistently leave your porch light on instead of just when you choose to go out. If anyone is watching your home, they’ll notice the pattern and may target your home for possible break-in. You can even install dusk to dawn sensing light bulbs so you don’t even have to flip a switch. Inside your house, put a light or two on a timer to give the appearance someone is home. Join or start a neighborhood watch group. There are several active watch groups in Roseville. Contact PDCommunityServices@roseville.ca.us to see if there’s a group near your home. If you’re not able to join one, start a new group. There’s a starter guide on the RPD website. Get to know your neighbors, they’re your best crime prevention tool. Take note of their vehicles and who usually comes and goes from their house(s). Don’t be afraid to report suspicious activity if something looks out of place. Install a door brace bar inside your garage door to prevent someone from pushing the side door into your house open, and always lock the door from your garage to your house. Install accent lighting so you can see throughout your yard Take care of your landscaping by: o planting thorny shrubs or bushes under your windows o Prune bushes down to three feet high so you don’t create a place for criminals to hide o Trim trees up to six feet high so you can easily see around them Taking these simple steps can help protect you and your family from unwanted visitors or intruders. Being a good neighbor means looking out for unusual or suspicious activity. If you have an ongoing nuisance issue or when something doesn’t seem right and you want to report suspicious activity, call the non-emergency number at 916-774-5000. If you’re witnessing a crime in progress, call 911. Police officers catch several criminals each year and solve many cases because our community keeps watch and reports suspicious activity. Keep up the great work, Roseville!

  14. By: Rob Baquera, Public Information Officer, Roseville Police Department California has seen another devastating year of fires, sudden evacuations, and families losing their homes. Many from Roseville and across the state have rallied together to do what we can to take care of our neighbors. When we open our wallets to support those in need, scammers pay attention and do what they can to get some of that money. From fake organizations that sound legitimate, to cold calling with compelling stories, we encourage residents be cautious. Here are some tips to protect you from potential scammers, and ensure that your donations are going to reputable charities: Give to known, trustworthy charities – there are several ways to verify that an organization is legitimate. Avoid crowdfunding sites since you don’t always know where the funds are going. California’s Governor’s Office of Emergency Services has partnered with Philanthropy California at Philanthropy California | An initiative of Northern California Grantmakers, Southern California Grantmakers, and San Diego Grantmakers. WWW.PHILANTHROPYCA.ORG An initiative of Northern California Grantmakers, Southern California Grantmakers, and San Diego Grantmakers. that lists reputable organizations that will help those affected by the wildfires. Do not click links – if you get an email or text message asking for a donation, especially from an unknown number, do not click the link. Instead, open your internet web browser and type in the name of the organization requesting the donation. This should link you directly to the organization, if they’re reputable. Clicking on unknown or suspicious links may install malware on your device that allows scammers to access your personal or private information. Verify the website – when donating, make sure that the website is a secure site. All reputable charities use secure websites. There are several ways to confirm whether you are accessing a secure site. If the website changes from http:// to https:// then the site should be secure. Additionally, if a small lock icon appears next to the website address, the lock indicates that the website is secure. Make the call yourself – if you’re considering a donation to support a specific cause, do your research up front to verify you’re giving your money to the right place. If someone does cold-call you and you feel compelled to donate, hang up and call the charity back at the phone number listed online. This will ensure you’re actually talking to the legitimate organization. There are many legitimate charities doing great work to support those in need. If you’re planning to donate, take the extra time to ensure you’re hard earned money is actually going to the right place. If you’ve lost money or had your personal information stolen by a scammer, file an online crime report with the Roseville Police Department.

Published Aug. 25, 2021 The Delta surge has resulted in record numbers of COVID-related hospitalizations this week and is leaving our local hospitals with less room to absorb more patients requiring hospitalization. Hospitals in Placer County are providing critical care in areas not typically designed for that purpose, report a high level of acuity in their patients, and are experiencing strains on their workforce. COVID patients occupy nearly one third of licensed beds, a higher share relative to hospitals in other communities. Beyond hospitalizations, cases in school settings are rising too among students and staff, resulting in increasing numbers of classroom outbreaks that, in some cases, have led to the temporary cancellation of in-person instruction. School-related cases were uncommon and largely isolated with previous COVID-19 variants, yet early signs point to more students and staff who are turning up positive as a result of a COVID exposure. To preserve critical infrastructure that serves all, including hospitals and schools, Placer County Public Health is advising residents regardless of vaccination status to use high-quality masks while in all indoor settings to protect against the highly infectious Delta variant. “Our individual actions during this Delta surge are impacting everyone, including those seeking health care or in-person instruction,” said Interim Health Officer Dr. Rob Oldham. "Placer County Public Health stands behind organizations who take precautions to support our community's efforts to preserve key infrastructure such as implementing universal indoor masking, which is much less disruptive than other restrictions experienced during the pandemic." To provide a sufficient layer of protection, residents are also advised to use higher quality masks, like a surgical or KN95 mask. Higher quality masks were largely in short supply during the beginning of the pandemic but are now more readily available at local drug stores or online. For those who are 12 and older and unvaccinated, talk to your doctor right away about questions you have about COVID-19 vaccines. Most patients currently hospitalized locally for COVID-19, including those in the intensive care unit, have not received a COVID-19 vaccination. While vaccination may not fully prevent infection, it’s one of the best tools we have to reduce the risk of severe illness and hospitalization. Please visit myturn.ca.gov to schedule your appointment today.

  20. By: Rob Baquera, Public Information Officer, Roseville Police Department More of us are working from home and spending more time on our cellphones, laptops, and electronic devices. Phone scammers and cyber criminals are finding creative ways to steal your information, use your personal information, or get you to send them money. Here are a few ways scammers try to target people, and how to avoid being scammed: Call from a number like yours or from a number with the same area code. Do not answer calls from unrecognized numbers – let the call go to voicemail. If you do answer the call, do not give out any personal information Automated recording calls or “robocalls” offering credit cards, loans, payday loans, credit card protection, or to address your expiring car warranty. Do not return calls to any phone numbers left by the recording. If you did not request the service they’re offering, do not engage with the caller. Urgent requests for charitable gifts or support for charitable causes. Do not send money or give out your personal information. If you want to donate, initiate the donation, and contact the charity directly. Many charities are listed with the federal Franchise Tax Board. Their current exemption status can be checked on the FTB website. In addition to recognizing phone scams, you can take steps to minimize the number of calls you get. Register your home landline or cellphone numbers into the National Do Not Call Registry to reduce telemarketer calls. If you do get a call you don’t recognize or have confirmed to be from a scammer, use your cellphone’s call blocking feature. This is your best defense against unwanted calls from a specific number. Your cellphone may also offer a feature to send all calls not in your contacts list, straight to voicemail. You can always report phone scams, whether you’ve lost money or any of your personal information. Here are some resources for reporting phone scams: ReportFraud.ftc.gov is the link to the Federal Trade Commission’s Fraud Reporting website. Use this site if you’ve lost money to a scammer. Use DoNotCall.gov if you want to report a call and did not lose money. If you’ve lost money or had your personal information stolen by a scammer, file an online crime report with the Roseville Police Department. Recognizing there are bad actors out there who are working hard every day to scam you out of money is the first step to protecting yourself. We encourage you to share this information with older adults who may not be as savvy with their cell phones or computers. We know scammers specifically target seniors who are all-too-often victimized.

Take care when using your recycling sites Throughout the city are several recycling sites for cardboard, newspaper, and other recyclables. These sites are an essential community benefit to recycle additional material that might not fit in your trash and recycling bin at home. Often we see these sites used to dump trash or recyclables are left outside of bins improperly, creating a mess for everyone. When this occurs, it requires a significant amount of city staff time to clean up—sometimes up to two hours daily in addition to checking and dumping bins. Help keep our sites clean and tidy.
