  7. By Rob Baquera, Public Information Officer, Roseville Police Department It will soon be back-to-school time. Many kids, teachers, and parents are eager to return to a regular routine of a daily school schedule. With kids going back to school comes the hustle and bustle of more pedestrians crossing the street, riding their scooters, and traversing the roadways while listening to their favorite tunes. As drivers, it’s our responsibility to always be on the lookout for potential road hazards, which includes kids attempting to cross the street by suddenly stepping off the sidewalk or popping out between parked cars. Here are some safety driving tips to consider while driving in school zones: Be on the lookout for signs, signals, crossing guards, and school buses with their lights on. When approaching a school bus, obey the lights and never pass a school bus whose lights are red, or the stop sign is extended. When entering a school zone, always obey the traffic laws, and slow down. Watch for crossing guards and obey their signals. Be aware of children near schools, playgrounds, bus stops, sidewalks, cross walks, in the streets, at the corners, or in parking lots. Avoid passing other vehicles while driving in a school zone. Never make a U-turn in a school zone. Never text while driving, especially in a school zone. Avoid using your phone unless it is completely hands-free. Avoid any distractions such as loud music, eating, applying makeup, etc., especially in a school zone and when children are present. Unless licensed to do so, never use handicap or emergency vehicle lanes or spaces to drop off or load/unload children at school. Watch for children and adults riding bicycles. Watch for children/teens walking who appear distracted (looking down) as they may be looking at their phone and may not hear or notice your vehicle. Returning to in-person school means more kids on the street and adults on the road. Accidents are bound to happen. Let’s do our part to avoid these incidents where we can and keep our eyes on the road and our kids as safe as possible.

  15. June 15, 2021 . Conserve energy ahead of high heat Roseville Electric Utility is encouraging customers to conserve energy as extreme heat hits the region. Residents and businesses alike can reduce energy usage with simple adjustments like bumping thermostats up at least two degrees and turning off unnecessary lighting. Conservation helps lower demand and avoid outages. Here are some simple ways to save: Set air conditioning thermostats to 78 degrees or higher, if health permits. Don’t use major appliances, like the dishwasher or clothes washer/dryer during peak hours. Turn off unnecessary lights. Close blinds and drapes. Use fans when possible to keep cool. Together, we can all make a difference. For additional low-cost conservation tips and other energy efficiency-related home improvements, visit roseville.ca.us/lowermybill. 19. Keep crooks out of your garage and house By: Rob Baquera, Public Information Officer, Roseville Police Department With warm weather and longer days comes yard work. Many residents keep their lawn equipment and other valuables inside their garage. It is not uncommon for residents to leave their garage door open while they are outside working. This may be convenient, but it is an open invitation to a burglar. Even if you are out front mowing, a criminal can quickly slip into your garage and enter your home. This can happen in a matter of five seconds or less. Here are a few tips you can incorporate into your daily routine to secure you garage and home. Secure your garage door Don’t leave your garage door opener in your car. If a thief breaks into your car and steals the remote, he has an easy way into your home. Secure the emergency release. If you are away from home for an extended period of time, use a zip-tie to secure the emergency release. Make sure the garage door is closed. When leaving your home, don’t just hit the remote and drive away. Stop to make sure the garage door closes and stays down. Check the garage door before going to bed. It is not uncommon for night shift officers to run across an open garage door. Close the garage door all the way down. You may be tempted on hot days to crack the garage door to let out the heat, but don’t do it. A criminal can easily slip under a partially open door. Secure your home Neighbors play a key role in preventing home thefts. Homeowners that have good relationships with their neighbors are less likely to be victimized. Neighbors looking out for each other and reporting suspicious activity will help reduce crime. Follow these tips to keep crooks out of your home. Padlock the side gate of your home. If a criminal can easily walk into your backyard, they’ll have a great place to hide while they attempt to break into your home. Lock all your doors. Whenever you leave home, make sure all the doors to your home are locked. This includes the side garage door and the door from your garage to your house. These are often overlooked by the homeowner. Close and lock your windows when you leave even if it is for a short time. With warmer weather you may be tempted to leave the windows open to let in fresh air. Open windows will also let in a thief. If you have an alarm system make sure to use it. Arm your system every time you leave. Post signs to let a potential thief know that you have a security system. You can reduce your chances of becoming a victim of home theft by following some simple rules every time you leave home. Don’t make your home an easy target for a criminal this season.
